How a leak works
Water starts at a joint and travels.
The field of a roof is the part doing the simplest job: shedding water downhill. The hard parts are the joints — where a plane meets a wall, where two planes meet in a valley, and everywhere a pipe or a vent comes through. Flashing is what makes those joints work, and flashing is what fails.
Once water is in, it does not fall straight down. It runs along the underside of the decking, follows a rafter, and comes through a ceiling somewhere else entirely. The stain on your ceiling is where the water finished, not where it started.
So a repair is diagnosis first. We walk the roof, read where the water can be getting in, and open only what needs opening. Guessing costs more than looking, and it costs it twice.

It keeps the house dry while the repair is arranged. Anyone treating it as the finish is selling you time, not work.
Repeated repairs on an old roof are a false economy
Past a certain age, each repair buys less than the last one did. We will say so when that is where you are.
Rain does not stop a diagnosis
It stops most of the work, but an active leak is often easiest to trace while it is actually running.

There is a stain on my ceiling. Is it the roof?
Often, but not always, and almost never directly above the stain. Water travels along the decking and down a rafter before it shows. A plumbing vent, a bathroom fan and condensation all leave marks that look the same from below.
How do you find a leak?
By reading the joints first — flashing, valleys, anything that comes through the roof — and by matching what is inside to what the roof can actually do. We open what needs opening, not what is convenient.
