A metal roof is two quite different things wearing one name. Standing seam hides its fasteners inside a raised seam that runs ridge to eave. Exposed-fastener panel screws through the face. They cost differently, they age differently, and they suit different houses.

The material
Standing seam, and the panel you screw through.
On a standing-seam roof the panels are locked to clips underneath and the seam stands proud of the water. Nothing penetrates the surface, so there is no line of rubber washers ageing in the sun. It is the quieter, longer-lived, more expensive of the two.
An exposed-fastener panel is screwed straight through into the framing, with a washer at every screw. It goes on faster and costs less, and its maintenance is those washers: they are what eventually need attention, not the metal.
Both come in steel and in aluminium. Near salt air aluminium earns its premium; inland around Atlanta, coated steel is the common choice.

When metal earns its keep.
Low slopes shingle can't cover
Shingle needs pitch to shed water. A porch roof or a shed dormer that is nearly flat is a job for standing seam.
Long, clean runs
A simple roof with few penetrations is where standing seam looks its best and installs most economically.
Heat
A light-coloured metal roof reflects a good deal of what a dark shingle absorbs, which matters on a house with rooms under the roof.
A roof you intend to keep
Metal costs more than shingle up front. That trade only pays if you are staying.
What to know
Four things people get wrong about metal.
It does not attract lightning
Metal conducts, it does not attract. A metal roof is non-combustible, which is the opposite of the worry people arrive with.
It is not loud
The drumming people remember is a barn roof on open purlins. Over solid decking and underlayment, rain on metal is close to rain on shingle.
Hail dents it more than it leaks it
Hail can leave a metal roof cosmetically marked while it keeps doing its job. Whether that is worth a claim is a conversation with your insurer, not with us.
Metal moves
Panels expand and contract with the temperature. Standing seam is built to let them; a panel fastened as if it were rigid is how a metal roof starts to fail.

Is a metal roof loud when it rains?
Over solid decking and underlayment, no — that reputation comes from barn roofs on open framing with nothing underneath.
Does a metal roof attract lightning?
No. Metal conducts electricity but does not draw a strike, and unlike shingle it will not catch fire if one lands.
Can metal go over my existing shingle roof?
Sometimes, and it depends on what is under the shingle and what your county allows. It is one of the first things we look at on the walk.
